How to choose fabric for a uniform
Composition, weight and colour: a practical checklist for uniform buyers and garment factories.
A practical checklist
- 01
Start from how it is worn
Office service, field duty or ceremonial wear? Daily, rough wear needs more polyester for abrasion resistance; ceremonial wear can carry more wool.
- 02
Pick the weight for the season
Under 230 g/m² for summer, 230–270 for all-season, over 270 for winter and outer garments.
- 03
Fix the colour to a reference
Agree a physical reference sample. Yarn-dyed cloth keeps colour consistent across reorders.
- 04
Ask for test results
Weight, breaking load, abrasion, shrinkage and colour fastness, measured on the lot you will receive.
- 05
Plan the reorders
Uniforms are replaced in waves. Choose a mill that keeps reference samples, so new jackets match old ones.
Where to start in our range
For most service uniforms, the WZ004 series (50% wool, 260 g/m²) is a reliable all-season choice. For dress uniforms, WZ001 (70% wool) gives a finer handle.
